Boy Scout Troop 246 was founded on February 5, 1962 by a group of church members. Their goal was to provide a scouting experience for young men living in the "new" area northeast of Winter Park. In those days, Aloma Avenue was a dirt road. The Troop was chartered to the Aloma United Methodist Church as it is today. For over 50 years, the leaders of Troop 246 have served the community. Due to our unique location near the border between Orange and Seminole counties, we have scouts from both counties
The Troop is based on the Pledge of Allegiance, The Scout Oath, the Scout Law, and the Outdoor Code.
Since 1962 there have been over 500 Scouts and 12 Scoutmasters.
In 50 years of operation we have honored over 70 Eagle Scouts. The first Eagle Scout rank was awarded in 1965 and there were a total of 7 Eagles awarded that same year. Our Scouts have gone on to be good citizens:
- 2 graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy
- 1 graduated from West Point
- 3 have become ordained ministers
Our Troop camps every month and does both a summer and winter week of camping. We normally go to a summer camp in one of the mid-Atlantic states such as Camp Daniel Boone in North Carolina or Camp Old Indian in South Carolina. In 1994 we took a two-week trip which included visiting Washington, D.C. and a week at Camp Goshen in Virginia. This coming June, we will go to summer camp at Camp Woodruff near Atlanta, GA.
Most years, the Troop participates in a 3 to 5 day canoe trip on one of the many rivers in Florida, such as the Peace River, the Withlacooche River and the Ocklawaha River.
Boy Scout Troop 246 is very civic oriented. We participate in the "Scouting for Food" program each November and we assist the promoters of the Winter Park Art Festival each year by voluntering to park visitors cars.
